One of the most commonly recycled materials is cardboard. The United States does a pretty good job of recycling paper and cardboard products. Out of all Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), paper and cardboard accounted for over 26 percent of MSW alone. In 2014, the latest year that the EPA has released stastistics for, 89.5 percent of corrugated boxes were recycled. Out of all Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), paper and cardboard alone accounted for over 26 percent of recycled material. In total, 89 million tons of MSW were recycled in 2014. That recycling provided an annual reduction of 181 million metric tons of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, equivalent to the emissions of over 38 million cars.

But there are other uses for cardboard boxes when they are no longer needed, which includes fun activities that can teach children resourcefulness and creativity. Pinterest is a great place to look for ideas; you can find ideas for everything from birdhouses to usable furniture. There are entire businesses built around cardboard construction, including make.do, where you can buy kits and tools to help make cardboard ideas a reality. Because it is cheap and easy to work with, fine artists have also included cardboard as a sculpture material for years.

Of course, if your construction project wears out its welcome, there is always the recycle bin!
